Quails encompass two divisions of the pheasant family, the New World Quail or subfamily Odontophorinae, and the Old World Quail or subfamily Phasianinae like partridges. Old World quail inhabit mainly the Orient and are migratory. They travel in dense flocks. The smallest quail, the Chinese painted quail, is a relative of the domestic fowl. Most New World Quail are non-migratory game birds diversely inhabiting ranges from Canada to Argentina and from deserts to cloud forests.
